2Timothy17

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." (2 Timothy 1:7)

Encouragement of one another is something that we all need, no matter what our age or status in life. St Paul, here in his letter to Timothy, who is currently going thru some doubt regarding his calling as the Lord has directed him, due to the struggles and disappointment that is all around him, provides Timothy these powerful words. This helps Timothy remember what is both his and ours as Children of God and what we have because of our Lord’s compassion for us and what He calls us to do as His disciples. Paul, no stranger to trouble, heartache and disappointment himself, knows what is needed in this situation with Timothy, reminding him further in the chapter, of how both his grandmother and mother, faithful followers of Christ raised him with the compassion, love and devotion that is needed as a servant and one dedicated to his calling.

God’s power in the resurrection of His Son Jesus, gives us this assurance with which we also have as His children. Our internal fight with the sin that is within us and wants to come out, cannot be won or overtaken by a spirit of fear or weakness. This fight can only be defeated by what Christ has done for us, and with what He himself has filled us with due to the nature that we are as His Children.

Let us be an encouragement to others thru Christ so that all that we do may be firmly rooted in the gospel of our Risen Savior and the peace that passes understanding.

9 things God will not ask us after we die

Submitted by Mike Meyers

Matthew 256: 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

1.... God won't ask what kind of car you drove. He'll ask how many people you drove who didn't have transportation.

2.... God won't ask the square footage of your house, He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.

3.... God won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet, He'll ask how many you helped to clothe.

4.... God won't ask what your highest salary was. He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

5.... God won't ask what your job title was. He'll ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability.

6.... God won't ask how many friends you had. He'll ask how many people to whom you were a friend.

7.... God won't ask in what neighborhood you lived, He'll ask how you treated your neighbors.

8.... God won't ask about the color of your skin, He'll ask about the content of your character.

9.... God won't ask why it took you so long to seek Salvation. He'll lovingly take you to your mansion in heaven, and not to the gates of Hell

We have been blessed tremendously by the Lord through the many gifts that he has given us to enjoy in this life. Being a good steward of those gifts, is the natural out pouring of what a Christian does with those gifts.

To the Unknown God!!! Acts 17:28 ( submitted by Anonymous)

"'In Him we live and move and have our being'”

Paul had a problem. Here he was in Athens waiting for Silas and Timothy and as he walked around the city he noticed the many gods that were all part of the landscape of this beautiful city. He spoke with many that professed belief in these gods, listening intently, being respectful, but also presented the gospel of Jesus Christ in such a manner that it peaked the interest of many. So much so that he was invited to speak in the town square. Paul recognized that their idol worship also included an altar that stated “ to an unknown god”, and Paul introduces them to Jesus Christ, this unknown god to them, but the one true God. He goes on to explain that this is the God that created all and sustains all in life and death. This God needs nothing from us and through Him He gives life and breath and being. He satisfies our every need. Paul reports, that this unknown God is not one made by a sculptor, but is the one that has created and fashioned us to be who we are:  “ For in Him we live and move and have our being”.

Like Paul, we too can experience the remaking of ourselves in Christ on a daily basis. The tension, pressure and stress of the day draws us into ourselves and saps our energy and strength. This text reminds us that it is this God, the one true God that has made us and brought us into communion with himself, so that we are forever being replenished by and for Him. This text brings us physical, mental and spiritual energy restoring strength and power to our body, mind and soul. Let us remember this connection that we have to Christ and that we can always rely on Him to replenish and restore our soul.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing"

Our lives seem to be in a constant state of frenzy at times and we are so focused on ourselves that it is hard to realize that everyone around us are dealing with the issues of life, some more than others - this short video reminds us, as Paul did to the early church in his letters about the importance of building each other up, of being encouraging, to carry each other's burdens, not to become weary in helping others, and to take every opportunity to do good to all people.

A powerful reminder that we need to see each other as Christ sees...through His lense of love, grace, and compassion.

What are you looking for? - submitted by the unknown teenager. In response to the “Sick Puppies song “ What are you looking for?”

"What Are You Looking For?"

I walk the line of the disappointed
I celebrate when I'm in pain
My heart and mind can be disjointed
I built a bed in this hole I made
I recognize that I'm damaged
I sympathize that you are too
But I wanna breathe without feelin' so self-conscious
But it's hard when the world's starin' at you

Another piece of the puzzle, that doesn't fit
You throw your arms up, you're so damn sick of it
What are you working for
What are you searching for
Love
You won't be thinking of cars when
You're on your death bed and dyin'
You'll only be thinkin' of what you are paying for,
What you are praying for
Love

You join the line of the getting richer
You keep your pace but it's movin' slow
You are defined by all that you have hoarded
But you're surprised it doesn't fill up the hole.

Another piece of the puzzle, that doesn't fit
You throw your arms up, you're so damn sick of it
What are you coping for

What are you hoping for
Love
You won't be thinking of cars when
You're on your death bed and dyin'
You'll only be thinkin' of what you are paying for,
What you are praying for
Love

I'll never be what I see on the TV screen
I just keep dreaming of what I'm never gonna be
I can't think of a better way to waste my time then try

Another piece of the puzzle, that doesn't fit
You throw your arms up, you're so damn sick of it
What are you hurtin' for
What are you searching for
Love love love love
You won't be thinking of cars when
You're on your death bed and dyin'
You'll only be thinkin' of what you are paying for,
What you are praying for
Love love love love

You won't be thinkin' of cars when
You're on your death bed and dyin'
You'll only be thinkin' of what are you workin' for,
What are you waitin' for

Facebook, twitter, u-tube, the latest high packed, energy seeking, mind expanding Xbox live game, clothes, fashion, friends - all for what -  We go thru the latest gifts, gadgets and never ending craze in order to feel alive, awake and real in today’s world. But all we find is emptiness, things that don’t last, keep us happy, excited and on – the edge – not dealing with reality.

Renewal, strength and a new way to look at our lives are only possible by the one who makes all things possible. The one who gives us the ultimate strength, assurance and a grace that never ceases, because of His great love for us as His children. These passages below provide me comfort when I am sorrowful, strength when I am weak and fulfillment in my life making it complete. Come and meditate on the words spoken from the book that is the spring of eternal life:
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Exodus 15:2
The LORD is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my Father's God, and I will exalt him.
1 Chronicles 16:11
Look to the LORD and His strength; seek His face always.
Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 28:8
The LORD is the strength of His people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
Psalm 59:16
But I will sing of Your strength, in the morning I will sing of Your love; for You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
Psalm 105:4
Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His presence continually!
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Ephesians 6:10
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.
Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Thanksgiving – A journey of Thanksgiving or Obligation?

– submitted by George Lessmann – Executive Director

Deuteronomy 8: 7-9: For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land of flowing streams and pools of water, with fountains and springs that gush out in the valleys and hills. 8 It is a land of wheat and barley; of grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates; of olive oil and honey. 9 It is a land where food is plentiful and nothing is lacking. It is a land where iron is as common as stone, and copper is abundant in the hills.

These words from Moses describe the place that the Israelites were longing to see, feel and live within after spending 40 years in the wilderness. This is what they were longing for, - an ability to settle down, raise a family, get on with the life that the Lord wanted for them whereby they could prosper. This was the destination that they were hopping for -   Why did the Lord continue to let them wander around in the desert – hoping for them to catch what He was trying to teach them, or maybe taking that journey was to be more about making the people be and do what the Lord had for them to accomplish along the way.

What about you today? What is God doing in your life along your journey – what may He be trying to tell you or teach you. Perhaps it may just be how we are to look at our life as we live it.

You know, We are fully aware of our final destination, but our awareness and anticipation of this place that we long for is only known thru our human senses, what we can imagine in our own mind. Our minds that most people use less than 10% of what they are capable of. Our imagination of our final destination with God, is filled with much splendor, glory, captivating beauty, awe, majesty, honor, glory and righteousness – we can only comprehend this in our human form – not our spiritual form – but maybe what we are missing is the enjoyment of the journey of being utilized as to what plans God has for you here on earth -  plans especially since we know what the final destination will be. Are we keeping the Lord from using us fully for His kingdom, of allowing us to take us on the journey that He has prepared for you?

In this journey that you and I are living – is it presently being done with a heart filed with thankfulness or an attitude of obligation. Well, as a Christian the way that we live our journey is reassured through the gospel –

  • Instead of looking at our work as an obligation to make a living - We look at it as God’s expression in our lives to serve others
  • Instead of stressing over obligations or responsibilities that we  have to take care of your families – we rejoice that God has placed these people in our lives as a blessing to us
  • Instead about complaining about all the changes that are happening around us, thinking that life is moving too fast, or living in the past with your memories – We embrace the change that is happening and learn and grow in this environment keeping God at the center of our lives
  • Instead of feeling that we have to go to church and that we are doing our duty by attending worship on a weekly basis, we dig into the scriptures on a daily basis, come with questions and anticipation of what God is trying to teach us, look for answers with the pastor or other Christian friends and acquaintances  – praise and thank him from our heart and leave worship refreshed, excited about the week and the new adventure and journey that the Lord is leading us on.

During the entire time that the Israelites were in the desert there was one thing that God was trying to get across to them - Trust me, have confidence in me, know that I will care for you in everything. Trust me because I have made you – I have knitted you together in your mother’s womb, I know the numbers of hair on your head and I also know what you need, - I will care for you, love you, be with you always – until the end of your days and then you will spend eternity with me forever.

When we trust God– we put our confidence in him and his plans – our journey in life is one that is filled with thanksgiving.

When we don’t trust God – when we put our faith and confidence in ourselves and our plans – we become disappointed, we may become discouraged, we may be met with unpleasant and even long lasting consequences that will impact our life greatly to the negative. We go off the track and the journey that the Lord has already prepared for us and wants to bless us in as we make our way with Him through our lives, may not be possible for a little or a long while.

May this Thanksgiving, be one whereby you can experience your life as God would have you to see it. – submitted by George Lessmann – Executive Director

God’s Timing is Perfect

You have probably heard the phrase many times, "timing is everything". There is a great deal of truth in that statement. The difference between a good joke and a bad one is a person's sense of timing. An appropriate pause makes a joke . . . an inappropriate pause can kill the same joke.

Timing is essential when dealing with people. You don't ask for a raise when business is not going well or when things are tense around the office.

Timing is important in cooking.  The juicy hamburger on the grill is raw meat if cooked for too little time and a clump of charcoal if it is cooked too long.

Timing is important in medicine. If you catch a problem early you will be able to treat it more effectively. You timing is important in taking medication.  If you take your medicine as directed it will be helpful.  If you skip doses it loses it's effectiveness. If you take extra doses it can be deadly.

Timing is important in finance. When you invest in a particular stock and when you sell the particular stock will make the difference between whether you make money or lose it.  Knowing when to borrow and when not to borrow is the key to financial independence.

As we begin the season of Advent in celebration of Christ’s coming into the world and also in anticipation of His second coming, we marvel at how God’s timing is always perfect:

God had a plan and he followed thru on it:

  • He planned on Joseph asking Mary to marry him at just the right time
  • He sent Gabriel to Mary at just the right time
  • He had Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world at just the right time
  • He had Joseph and Mary make it to Bethlehem at just the right time
  • He had Jesus born in a stable at just the right time
  • He had the shepherds in position at just the right time
  • He had the angel come to Joseph warning him of Herod’s plan at just the right time

God’s timing for His plan is perfect and All have the ability to come to this knowledge and truth thru the Gospel -  This gospel truth – His plan – allows us to live with the freedom – knowing that we are saved – not because of anything that we have done – but only because of what he has done for us. The prophecy that was foretold in the old testament came to life – on the day that Jesus was born – there was one intention of God - that His Son would go to the cross and that his death would provide the payment for all of mankind’s sin- this payment, and His grace – allows us to be assured and confident that as Christians we can live in God’s timing trusting in his plan for us

God’s timing is always perfect, but ours is often flawed and our decision making is not in keeping with His will for us. Decisions are often made that may lead to further difficulties down the road:

  • you get tired of waiting for the right "someone" and so you agree to live together or you marry someone who is not right for you.
  • you want something now so you charge it rather than waiting till you have the money and end up paying more and digging yourself into financial bondage..
  • Instead of waiting for a nice quiet and calm moment to talk to a friend about a problem, you blurt it out in a spirit of confrontation when others are around.
  • Instead of a church waiting for the "right time" to build, they rush ahead and get into a mortgage that hampers ministry.

As we grow in our relationship with Christ, we listen and heed the Holy Spirit’s direction and guidance in our lives, our decision making is more in keeping with His will and the plan that He has for us. Let’s realize that God’s timing is always perfect and that we need to continue to seek His guidance and direction in all of the decisions that we make for ourselves.

Father God, you have placed us here at this time, at this place, and at this moment because everything that you do – you do for a purpose – you do for a reason – a reason and a purpose that goes along with your timing for our lives as you teach, mold us and shape us to become what you have planned for us.

As we begin this season of Advent, we begin to prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who came at the right time – all according to your plan. It is also a reminder of your second coming that we long for. Help us to remain alert and prepared so that when opportunities come upon us all according to your timing, that we will share the assurance and hope that comes from the good news of the gospel which allows us to live a life of freedom in You. Bless our efforts Lord as we utilize our time in service to others and to you. AMEN

The Blessing of Children – Matthew 18: 2-5
2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
During this Christmas season with all of busyness of time and schedules, of buying and spending, of baking, and wrapping and packaging, we often forget the importance that children play in our lives and the joy that they bring to us. This short power point reminds us that our children or grandchildren are in fact priceless in what they bring to us – all as God intended.

The Price of Children

Born to Serve – Mark 10:45
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Jesus was born into a world that would have Him lead a life of service and servant leadership with the one ultimate purpose to be the salvation for all of mankind. This life of service was one whereby He provided for us a model of what a Christian life looks like not only back then but also today. Let us take a look at these attributes and the characteristics that Christ encourages us to make part of our life in service to Him:

1. Empathy and compassion: Jesus showed empathy and compassion for others and taught his disciples and us the same – as He says “ “Whatever you do for the least of these my brethren to do it unto me”. Traits, that we have available is this area include active listening and responding appropriately. While we don’t have the gift of looking at into another’s heart, as Jesus could do, and targeting the hurts and disappointments instantly, we realize that by active listening, and developing relationships with people we can get to know others better and thus helping, supporting, encouraging and praying with that person. Compassion is not only caring about them, but also acting on their behalf,  doing something that will help them, with the goal of wanting to help alleviate the suffering. When I was at Emmaus serving, one of the things that Doris and others on the social ministry team was able to do was respond beautifully to the family whereby the father was killed. This group of caring Christians provided extra food, they followed up with phone calls and visits to the family making sure that the 6 children were well taken cared for. They provided clothing and other needed necessities for the family members who came by to help. They went out of their way to make sure that the family was supported, encouraged and felt the loving arms of the churches embrace, just as Christ provides for all of our needs, no matter what.

2. Humility - Being humble is hard to do, especially in the sometimes referred to “ cut throat business world” . But this happens everywhere and even to a greater extent sometimes, even in the church. We want others to be aware of what we do, so that we may be noticed and praised. It is very natural to want this, but Jesus tells us and shows us just the opposite. Jesus was especially humble. He was always telling others “do not tell others of what has happened” when He healed people, when He freed them from the clutches of demons. As servant leaders we need to be humble before God and before others, not self-serving, nor selfish. Those that have a humble spirit do not need to be applauded or praised. They will recognize that abilities owned that they have are a gift from their gracious God and will not have come through their human achievement or natural talents. They will not therefore need to promote themselves, to boast, to posture to advertise their skills. Their humility will make them personally secure, not continually needing the affirmation of others.

3. Serving and giving: Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 9:7
Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. God does not ask us to give anything or do anything that we don’t want to – but to give out of love for others. This attitude of giving comes from the realization that what we have is not ours, does not come because of what we do, how we act or by our own efforts – it comes because God in his graciousness has given us and allowed us to use our talents and skills in such a way and we are being blessed by him.  It’s important to realize that in God's economy, our time and money are not our own. We are stewards of his earthly kingdom. God allows us to make our own decisions in regards to the utilization of resources and to make them wisely. I know of a young medical student that just returned several weeks ago from a trip to Nigeria. This young man had a real change of heart regarding things.  Living with a family and three other students and a mom and her young daughter he realized what is was like to live in poverty. The house was no bigger that 2 small bedrooms; showers that consisted of no more than 2 minutes and with every meal that included rice and beans. What he stated was two things that he realized – first that these people were genuinely happy and they basically have nothing. He also saw the importance of giving back and stated that one day after becoming a doctor, he would like to go and help in the country providing basic medical services to those who don’t have. People who truly understand where there blessings come from have a much easier time giving of themselves when it comes to sharing of their time, talent and treasures

So Where is God asking or directing you to go, or do, or tell or to provide? What opportunities?  what situations?  what problems has God placed in your life to maybe help you to look at things differently?  Have you taken that next step and to see where God is trying to lead you. Perhaps He is trying to tell us to turn away from a focus on ourselves to a focus on others? To help us become the servant leaders that we need to become. To show us that there are many out there that need what you have to offer and that is the aspect of leading others to him. One of the things that God uses in our life is the aspect of always helping us to realize that we need to rely on him,  not just a little but fully. I am not saying here that we don’t just wait on God to do everything as that is silly.  But we do need to continue to seek his guidance and direction, His support and encouragement and His assurances and this can only happen as we draw closer to him and seek his guidance thru the scriptures,  thru prayer and thur living a life that is focused on others.

“ THE WORD BECAME FLESH ” – a new look at an old story

submitted by George R. Lessmann Jr. - MMLMS Executive Director

Prayer - Lord – you came as a stranger to this world – the night you were born - born of such lowly circumstance. This night was just another night for millions and millions of people who had no idea of who you were or why you are coming. Today Lord, we still have the same problem as we did back them but almost more so as -  especially as the day of your birth has been turned into a festive holiday whereby many see it only as a time to once again focus on themselves, drink, eat and be merry – Lord, help us to all stay focused on the true meaning of Christmas and understand that without your coming and completing the tasks that you have been sent to do, we would indeed, only be living for ourselves and today.

John 1

The Word Became Flesh

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning.
3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood[a] it.
14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,[d] who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Choir -  softly singing -
Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger;
There He lay, the undefiled,
To the world a Stranger.
Such a Babe in such a place,
Can he be the Savior?
Ask the saved of all the race
Who have found His favor.

1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register.
The city was packed that evening, people coming from everywhere, just so they could get there names on the tax roles – it was an uncomfortable night, dressed with too little on – Peter was chilled as He and Ruth rode their horses into town, they finally spotted the place a quaint little inn just on the outskirts of Bethlehem – only a 2/10th of a mile from the village square where they would go to register in the morning. They were happy, that their 11 hour ride was over and went in to sign in at the front desk. After getting their key, they removed the saddle bags from their horses and brought their belongings to their room. After putting away their clothes and other toiletries that they had brought, they realized that they hadn’t eaten since morning, so they went off in search of a quiet café to get a bite to eat – the streets were crowed and there was a constant rush of people and noise everywhere,. Finally they spied a dimly lit café and headed over, they sat down and was greeted by a large dark and mustached man by the name of Saul. He was friendly and seemed overly happy and excited. They had an impression that he was probably this way because he was making large amounts of money with all the people he was serving

They reviewed the menu and decided to order several specials which seemed to be popular with this out of town crowd. After ordering and being brought some tea – they settled back in their chairs and looked upon the busyness that was going on around them both inside the café and outside the windows which pointed in a easterly direction.

After a few minutes there food came and they settled down to enjoy a warm meal that was tasty - as they sat and thought about the journey home the following day. They wondered how long they would have to stand in line – just to get this taken care of , as it was important for them to get back to the work that awaited them at home. It was a short visit that was necessary and it was nice to at least be off together without the kids.  After a fine meal they wandered back toward the inn. As they approached their place of residence for the night, they noticed sitting outside with the rest of the horses of those that had come to also register a small dirty old donkey, looking grayish and matted. The donkey looked tired and worn out and in bad need of some nourishment- As they walked in thru the front door, a man and his very pregnant wife came limping out the door. You could tell that she seemed to be in some discomfort but her husbands reassuring voice seemed to help relax and soften her face, “ don’t worry Mary, we will find someplace to stay tonight. I am so tired she said, They walked toward the worn out donkey, fed it some carrots, Peter heard a soft braying that he felt almost sounded like thank you from the worn out old critter

4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
____________________________________________________________
Ruth felt a twinge of guilt about the couple, but this quickly passed and she was so glad that they had gotten there earlier because at least they had a warm bed to stay in that evening and she felt comforted because the food was beginning to make her somewhat drowsy . She was very ready to slip into a quiet restful sleep that she anticipated once her head hit the pillow on this chilly night.
Peter and Ruth went back to their room and changed into their bed clothes, read for a few minutes the parchments and instructions that were needed for the next day and within a few minutes were fast asleep.
Peter and Ruth sleep gloriously thru the night and their dreams seemed to carry them off to a distant land – one that was unfamiliar to them

-6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

____________________________________________________________
Joe was tired, it was going to be a long night and he really was not up for being with these sheep. His companions had a little too much to drink this evening and they were talking silly and goofing around teasing the sheep – he knew this would not be a good night. It was fairly cool this evening and he was glad that he had brought along an extra tunic to keep himself from getting cold.
_____________________________________________________________
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
_____________________________________________________________
The night slowly drifted by for Joe and he kept on having to keep his rambunctious companions from falling asleep – the sheep also seemed a little on edge that night. It was passed midnight and Joe was making his rounds on the south quarter and suddenly his eyes were drawn up to the east – he though he was seeing things but there seemed to be some very bright lights off in the distance – It was hard to tell because they were in a very hilly region , and sometimes because of when the clouds pass in front of the moon – the brightness seems to be more noticeable – but tonight there were no clouds. He also thought he heard some singing – but that was not possible. As he stood there looking east with the bright lights bouncing off the hills and with the echoing of singing – He thought to himself – this is strange - maybe his companions that were now fast asleep were beginning to rub off on him. He stood there for a few minutes longer and as fast as it had come – it was now gone and he stood there alone hearing only the howling of a wolf in the distance and the crickets around his feet
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." 13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests

In the morning Peter and Ruth awoke, feeling fully satisfied with their sleep and refreshed in both body and mind and also feeling hungry. After their daily hygiene routine they headed off to an early breakfast so that they would not be too late tom get registered, Well you would have thought that everyone else had the same idea as even in his early predawn time, the streets were bustling with activity and people scurrying about

As they walked to the café, it seemed warmer to them this morning and not as brisk, unusual for this time of year. Getting to the café they were relived to see that there was still room to eat so they were offered a table and sat down to order, The small of deeply brewed coffee lingered over the tables and they could hear the pots and pans along with the noise of the cooking areas. Receiving their coffee the aroma was quickly received by their nostrils and as they drank the coffee, the thick warm liquid coated their throat – quickly awakening their senses and moving down thru the rest of the body.   As they sat there taking in the whole scene they could’nt help to notice the buzz and chatter going about – it seemed to be something about a woman having her baby in a stable not far from the café. and some visitors who had come to see them early in the morning awakening a number of visitors to town because of the sheep that they had brought with them –making quite a racket
Peter and Ruth listened intently and thought to themselves – without saying a word to the other - It almost sounded like they were speaking about the woman that they had seen –  it seemed so unfair.

The food came piping hot to the table and peter and Ruth smiled to the other. They ate their meal in silence, not feeling much like talking. After finishing what they could, they got up and stretched,  they looked at each other – Peter said, we have got a long journey back home to finish our work and pick up the children.
They walked briskly down toward the city market area where we were to meet the government officials, to get this registration taken care, They had so much more to do that day.

Choir - Softly singing
Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger;
He is still the undefiled,
But no more a Stranger.
Son of God of humble birth,
Beautiful the story;
Praise His Name in all the earth,
Hail! the King of Glory!

Today is Christmas day – a birthday of sorts - the celebration of a baby being born – flesh and blood – a new life enters the world.  This birth like any other child brought into the world is usually a time to celebrate – this celebration is usually though a private one - for the family and friends that are close – With the realization of a child coming into the world also comes all of the joys, sorrows, problems and opportunities that come with growing up and both the happy and challenging times that parents face.
But today’s birthday and that is Christmas is celebrated as a world wide  celebration. But is it because of what occurred over 2000 years ago, or something else
Is this day just a day of celebration based on the elusive Santa Claus that no one seems able to see or find – is it just another day in my life, in your life – well to those who were part of the story that I just told – those looking from the outside in – that’s all it was to a person who was uniformed like most of the world at that time, and to a certain extent not only then, but even now. – that’s all it was back then– another day of busyness, of getting things done, of worries fears, stresses and all of the other things that come from a normal day – to those in Bethlehem for the census – it was a way to get away – making perhaps a 11 hour journey, obeying laws following rules, getting things done – to those in the fields it was just a night of watching the sheep so that they would not get attacked -
No celebration back then, except for those who were witnessed to and those who came to see the Baby Jesus – as prophecy came into being - but as we well know the focus of today is not about a baby being born, the celebration of the Christ who has come to save mankind from himself - but for today, is all about stuff – what we buy, how much we give, a glitzy day that is all about the self and what we can get – lets face it - its about the self – and getting something more

This quest for something more is inborn in all of us – it’s name is selfishness and as babies we learn how this works pretty quickly  – we come into this world totally relying on others to care for us. We need to be fed – we cry out, we need to get changed, we cry out – we don’t get our way – we cry out – and what are the response that most babies get – they get attention, they get their needs met, they get pretty much instance response – which is normal and needed, as they are totally reliant on their caretakers. This selfish problem does not go away as children get older, and grow into teenagers and eventually adults. Unless Healthy self esteem, empathy and care and concern for others is developed by parents and others in the guidance and direction of children and teens as they grow into adulthood helping to balance this dichotomy between self and others. – As Christians we are able to remove that line and treat others more like we like to be treated – we go beyond ourselves, thinking of others more than ourselves as Jesus did.  Our focus on self preservation and wanting “ just a little more” still comes out in many unhealthy ways . This selfishness that we have will never be satisfied – this wanting just a little more –

But also this whole aspect of something more is why God sent his son, born of a baby into this world, but this is not something that we just wanted – it was something that IS NEEDED -  Our Father in Heaven saw the world being torn about by sin, greed, and mans own selfish desires with all of mankind headed to destruction and satan’s plan of death and hell to be put into play – The prophecy of old – the promise that was given in the old testament so that believers would realize that yes, there is hope – even though the old covenant between God and man was continually being broken – this new covenant becomes fulfilled

He knew that we needed something more – but something more than the presents, the focus on our self and our desires and wants.   He sent His Son who became self-less for our sake – He took our punishment for our sins  all of them – all our selfishness, all of our evilness all of our focus on our self-   The something more that our father gave us was this gift – this gift of salvation which was Priceless– and our ability to enjoy what our life is here on earth – as we are not focused on ourselves but others

They say for every birth there is a corresponding death somewhere, and when Jesus was born – there was a corresponding death and that was the death of sin, the death of hell and the death of the consequence of our everyday life being focused only on ourselves.

This priceless gift is not just an eternal quest that is somewhere off in the future – the Lord gives us this something more that we have available to us each and every day of our lives - it is something that we can and do use every day of our lives – its that personal relationship with Christ that draws you closer to Him– the reading and study of the scriptures, prayer and talking with the Lord who is your friend and confidant – realizing that the plan he has for you is good –  and that as Christians we can rely on Him fully knowing that He has our best interest and future in His hands.

God’s word, His promise moves from prophecy to real flesh and blood human form reality and the celebration of Christmas is all about the beginning of his journey to the cross - this journey which frees us from that which so looks to enslave us.

Christmas is a celebration - a celebration of God’s promise being delivered in the form of a baby. This gift that is given to us today is unique – not only because of the assurance of eternal life but it is a gift that is not given so that we keep it for ourselves. No this gift was given so that we share it over and over again with others – especially those who don’t know about the gift.

This gift that we share with others allows God’s promise’s to multiply to others and thus gains more and more in value and His kingdom on earth grows. Thank you for sharing this gift that has been given you with others.

As we end – we move back to Peter and Ruth -  Peter and Ruth were happy to be going back home after standing in line for hours, there feet and legs ached and they were tired. As they walked back to their horses to saddle up and leave for home, they walked in silence. Peter, who was deep in thought suddenly perked up – and said – you know, I was reading Malachi the other day you know they talk about a this Savior being born, who was going to free us and that it would happen somewhere around here. I really wonder if that prophecy will ever happen – funny that I should think about that  - well can’t worry about that – let’s get going, we got a long ride ahead of us.

Now may the God who has fulfilled this prophecy thru the birth of His Son Jesus who brings us salvation grant unto you and your family this everlasting grace, mercy and peace at Christmas time and always. AMEN

JANUARY 1, 2012 ( submitted by Dr. Joseph A. S.)

Are you resolute in your resolutions?

Here it is – January 1, 2012 and what are you resolving to do this coming year? Will this just be another year of promises that you make to yourself, of lists of things that you propose to do, but never get around to, of secret habits that you want to break. Let’s face it – we all have issues, problems, hang -ups, addictions, and all sorts of stuff in our lives that need to change, but as we know, many of problems and changes that we would like to see disappear – are really something that we want to hang onto, as bad as they might be for us.

Change is not easy, adjustment is painful, correction is difficult, modification of behavior is burdensome and transformation of oneself  is hard when left to ourselves. So what do we do with the change that is so badly needed in our lives? St Paul in his letter to the Romans points to the one by whom change ( this transformational difference) can occur, and which happens by the renewing and the getting right within your mind, about who God is, what He has done for you and how He will change your thinking and thus your life. ( Romans 12:2)

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

If you know the Savior and have a personal relationship with Him, you can find this strength through Him and what He has done and continues to do in your life. We just need to keep Him front and center in our lives – and go to Him often in prayer, listen to His still small voice that awakens you to the truth or to others that He works through, and be refreshed in the many promises that He gives you in the readings of scripture.  If you are just getting to know Him or don’t know Him, we invite you to contact us so that we can get you the information that you need. To begin this relationship that is so necessary and life giving that comes from a personal relationship with Him.  Please review the “contact us” information on our website. We pray that God will bless your journey in knowing and experiencing Him in your life.
